Kava vs. Kratom: What's the Difference?
Updated October 2026
Most South Florida kava bars serve both kava and kratom, and menus don't always explain the difference. They come from different plants, feel different, and carry different risks.
The short version
- Kava is a root from the South Pacific. Most people find it calming and social.
- Kratom is a leaf from Southeast Asia. It can feel energizing in small amounts and sedating in larger ones.
Where they come from
Kava (Piper methysticum) is in the pepper family and has been part of ceremony and daily life in Fiji, Vanuatu, Tonga, Samoa, and Hawaii for centuries. Kratom (Mitragyna speciosa) is in the coffee family and grows in Thailand, Indonesia, and Malaysia, where workers have long chewed the leaves or brewed them as tea.
How they show up on a menu
Kava is usually served as a "shell" or in flavored drinks and mocktails. Kratom is usually called "tea" and served iced and flavored. If you're unsure which one you're ordering, ask. Bartenders expect the question.
How they feel
Kava tends to relax the body and ease social nerves. Kratom is less predictable: people describe it as coffee-like at low amounts and more sedating at higher amounts. Both vary a lot from person to person.
Risks
Kava's main concerns are rare liver problems and mixing it with alcohol or certain medications. Kratom carries a real risk of dependence and withdrawal with regular, heavy use, and can interact with other sedatives. See is kava safe? and the kratom guide for details.
Legal status in Florida
Kava is legal and sold as a beverage. Natural kratom is legal for adults 21 and older, while concentrated 7-OH kratom products are banned under emergency rules. Kratom law has changed often, so check current rules.
Which should I try first?
If you're new, most bartenders will point you to kava first. It has a longer tradition, fewer dependence concerns, and no state age limit tied to it. Start with one shell and give it half an hour.
