Your First Time at a Kava Bar: What to Order and Expect

Updated October 2026

Kava bars look a lot like regular bars: a long counter, low lighting, music, maybe a trivia night. The difference is what's behind the bar. Here's how to enjoy your first visit.

Most kava bars are built for hanging out, not a quick drink.

Pick a bar that fits your night

Some kava bars are lively, with DJs, karaoke, or open mic nights. Others are quiet places to read, study, or work on a laptop. Use the directory to filter by vibe, from social and lounge to coworking and outdoor.

What to order

Not sure? Tell the bartender it's your first time. They'll usually walk you through the menu and may offer a small taste.

Say "Bula"

"Bula" is a Fijian greeting that means life, and it's the standard toast at kava bars. Many bars keep a simple version of the Fijian custom: say "Bula," drink the shell in one go rather than sipping it, and follow it with a chaser.

Kava cocktails are made without alcohol and are a gentler start than a plain shell.

Pace yourself

Start with one shell and give it 20 to 30 minutes. Kava builds slowly, and how strong it feels depends on the batch, your body, and whether you've eaten. Don't drink alcohol before or after.

Kava bar etiquette

Getting home

Most people feel clear-headed after kava, but if you feel any impairment, don't drive. Florida DUI law applies to impairment from any substance. Rideshare is easy from nearly every bar on this site.

About kratom tea

Many bars also serve kratom tea. It's a different plant with different effects, a dependence risk, and a 21-and-over age limit in Florida. Read the kratom guide before you order it.
