Kava vs. Alcohol: How They Compare

Updated October 2026

Kava bars exist because a lot of people want a night out without alcohol. But kava isn't just "a drink without alcohol." It acts on the body differently, and knowing how helps you enjoy it and stay safe.

How each one feels

Alcohol tends to build from a buzz into lowered inhibition, slower reactions, and, past a point, slurred speech and poor judgment. Kava usually feels calmer and more even: relaxed muscles, an easier mood, and a sociable feeling, while most people stay clear-headed and able to hold a real conversation.

That said, kava can still affect coordination, especially in larger amounts. "Clear-headed" doesn't mean unaffected.

The morning after

Kava doesn't cause a hangover the way alcohol does. Some people feel a little sleepy or sluggish the next morning, especially after a lot of kava or a lower-quality batch. Good bars serve noble kava partly to avoid that. Read more in types of kava.

Calories and sugar

Plain kava is low in calories. A traditional shell is mostly water and ground root. The flavored drinks are another story: kava mixed with juice, coconut, cream, or syrup can carry as much sugar as a cocktail. If that matters to you, order a traditional shell and pick your own chaser.

Never mix them

Don't drink alcohol before, during, or after kava. Together they increase sedation and put more strain on your liver. It's the single most common safety rule at every kava bar, and the reason the bars are alcohol-free in the first place.

Driving

Neither one is a green light to drive. Florida DUI law covers impairment from any substance, including kava. If you feel any effect, take a rideshare.

The social side

A night at a kava bar looks a lot like a night at a bar: music, games, friends, and a bartender who knows your order. The difference is that it's easier to remember, cheaper on your body, and friendly to people who don't drink at all. For more on that, see kava bars for sober and sober-curious nights.
